No more offside?
FIFA technical boss Marco van Basten wants to scrap offside and yellow cards

"The former World Player of the Year was employed by FIFA in September to oversee all technical areas ranging from innovations in technology to refereeing.

And the Dutchman's long-term vision for the game includes scrapping some of its most established rules.
"We must keep looking for ways to improve the game," Van Basten said in an interview with Sport Bild.

"To make it more honest, more dynamic, more interesting, so that what we offer is attractive enough.

"There are lots of variations which need to be tested in the coming years."

Van Basten says abolishing the offside rule would mean an end to games which "resemble handball where nine players, plus the goalkeeper, pack the penalty area and [the defence] is like a wall".

He argues sin-binning players would prove a greater deterrent than the yellow card system.

"That would frighten teams," he said. "It is hard to play 10 against 11, let alone with eight or nine.""

Re: No more offside?
It cuts out the most fucking irritating and contentious rule. If the refs and linis dont have to make the decision its better. It also means the players will be stretched out much more.

Would be like watching a load of children in the playground though.

Proper school playground football plenty of 12 goals to 10 results.
The Yanks will love it.

I'm open for a bit of tinkering with sin bins, but the off-side rule is an integral part of what makes football special, for me. We've had the rule for all our lives, which includes all the best, most exciting goal feast matches you've ever seen, so it's not like the rule fucks up what would otherwise be a great sport.

As Toe Rag said, it's all about cutting out goal hangers. If you removed the offside rule, you wouldn't get open games of football, you'd get more hoofs than ever, and more and more 7ft strikers.

They should also make the game rush-goalie as well.

How would anyone know what a professional game of footy would be like with no off side rule until it was played?

Sounds like the kind of idea Texas Iron would come up with.

Re: No more offside?
You could add in line between centre circle and penalty area which would mean you could only be offside in final third of pitch. That would stretch the game without being silly. Getting rid of offside altogether wouldn't work.

Re: No more offside?
Can see no offside working at the very highest level, when possession is valued and the ball not kicked as far as possible, at the earliest opportunity. As others have said , could be a bit kick and rush otherwise.

I'd make football offside penalty area only, with the same offside rules as ice hockey.

I refuse to believe offside is officiated accurately. How can a lino, when the ball is kicked say 70 yards away, possibly know if a player is marginally offside or not?

Fifth

Subbuteo rules. I've always advocated that.

Also, I think that the goalkeeper should have to play with a very long iron bar up his arse and badly injured players should simply be glued back together.

'I'd make football offside penalty area only,'

Excellent! This will combine the most difficult to judge aspects of offside and the penalty-kick and make officiating a hilarious spectacle worthy of the admission fee in itself.
